If you’ve had an online business for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve been told what to do. There are always people out there that think they know best, and love to tell you what you need to do to e successful. Here are a few of the phrases that you might have heard while building your online business:
You have to have a membership site.
You have to do social media.
You have to create your own products.
You have to do live videos.
I am here to tell you to ignore them. Seriously. I give you permission to let what they say go in one ear, and right out the other.
Can you have a successful business if you do nothing? Of course not! But you can definitely have a successful business even if your refuse to do some of the things that people tell you that you “have” to do. The key is “some” because you do have to choose something to do within your business, or you won’t have one.
Do What YOU Want To Do
It’s your business, so you get to decide how to run it. If you love being in front of the camera, you can do almost nothing else but create videos all day. If you’re a social butterfly, you can have most of your business be on social media so you’re talking to people all day. That’s great for you. For someone like me who is more quiet and introverted, I wouldn’t want to do either for more than a few minutes at a time.
Here’s another example. If it stresses you out to deal with plugins and software, and you don’t want to deal with hiring someone else to do it, then don’t do it! Work around it. You can find other ways to get what you want done. For example, you want to have a membership site? Sure, you can buy a plugin and have a professional looking membership site. But if even the thought of dealing with it gives you anxiety? Then figure out a way to make it work with email only. You can always password protect pages on your site. You don’t need to have a plugin in order to have a membership site.
If you want to do something, you can almost always find another way to do it that doesn’t go against who you are. You can create videos at home and post them later if you don’t want to do anything live. You can hire someone else to do your social media for you if you really want to be on it, but don’t want to do it yourself.
What Makes Them the Authority?
Here’s my question to you. What makes the person who said you HAVE to do something the boss? Sure, the person who told you that you have to do something might be making a lot of money with that method. But it doesn’t mean that you have to do it the same way. There are a lot of people online making a lot of money in other ways as well.
The amazing part about having an online business is that there are tons of ways to have one. You can do so many different things and still be successful. You can create and sell your own products. You can promote other people’s products. You can write and sell content. You can create amazing t-shirts and sell them online. You can create videos, audios, do social media, and more.
They’re all valid, and if you look into it, there are people doing each one of those making a lot of money. So just because someone tells you that you have to do something within your business, you don’t need to listen to them.
Why is This Important?
It’s important because you should be happy with your business. You don’t want to wake up stressed out and anxious because you’re doing something that you don’t want to do.
You want to wake up looking forward to working on your business. You want to be happy with it. You’ll put way more time and effort into your business if you’re doing things that you enjoy instead of things you hate.
You’ll also find that you’re more successful when you’re doing something you enjoy! It’ll come across that way. You’ll be more passionate about it. You’ll do a better job at it!
Figure out what it is that makes YOU happy within your business, and that’s what you should be doing. If you want to promote products via social media all day because it makes you happy, that’s awesome. But if someone else gets anxious at the thought of social media, and would prefer to write emails or create videos, that’s great for them too!
Don’t Use This as an Excuse
I’ve given you permission to ignore people that tell you what you have to do. But don’t use this an excuse not to do something you want to do. If you’re not doing something because you’re scared, it’s not a good enough reason. If you’re not doing it because you’ve never done it before and don’t know how, it’s not a good enough reason. You can always learn how to do something, or hire someone to do it for you.
You can’t do this with everything in your business. If you don’t do anything, or only do the bare minimum, you won’t make money online, and if you do, it won’t be a lot. Yes, you can choose what it is you do, but you need to make sure that it’s realistic.
Run some numbers. If you can make x dollars doing what you want to do, how many people would you need to buy it? Is it a realistic number? If so, awesome. If not, you need to go back and think about it again. Figure out how you can do what you want, but still earn enough with it.
The best way to create a successful business is to figure out what it is that you love to do, and what you’re good at. Then figure out what you absolutely do NOT want to do online. Once you figure those out, you can get to work and put your time and effort into the things that you enjoy and can help you have a successful business online.
