Steps to Take to Achieve Your Goals

Setting Goals

This is one of the many pieces of content that has been written about how to achieve your goals. Why are there so many articles, courses, etc… dedicated to helping people achieve their goals? The answer is twofold. First, what most people have in common is that we want to better ourselves. Second, many of us lose track of the goals we set, or simply don’t follow through with them.

We go through life creating goals. We create daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, annual goals, 5-year goals, and long-term goals. If that isn’t enough, these days we even create life goals, relationship goals, travel goals and more. This validates how goals seem to make our world spin each day, our lives dependent on them for our growth and progress.

It’s a human desire to want to succeed, but it’s not easy. If it was, we would all be following through with the goals that we set to help us get there. Success wouldn’t even be that important anymore, as it would be so common.

Our goals naturally change as time goes on, but how we are able to achieve them remains the same. Even if you think you lack ambition, you must have some goals in mind that you want to accomplish in your life. Here are the things you need to do to start achieving them.

Desire to Change

The driver of any achievement is desire. It’s useless to set out on any journey and try accomplishing anything without this. It always begins with you having the desire to go from point A (where you are now) to point B (where you want to be.) As long as you have a desire or a dream, you can translate that into a goal and make it happen. Look around you, anything you see all started as a seed of thought.

Choose Goals that Resonate with Who You Are

Now that you have an idea of what you want, formulate that into a goal. The main difference between a dream and a goal is action. A goal is something you are planning to act on, while a dream is something that stays with you as an idea or thought.

Choose goals that resonate with you. This way you’ll be motivated to move towards them and achieve them no matter what gets in the way. Your goals need to be your own and something with a strong purpose or why behind it. Make it your own or something even bigger than yourself. If it’s someone else’s goal for you, most likely you will not succeed because you won’t put in the effort required to do so.

Set your Goals in Stone

Now that you’ve got clearer goals in mind you want to achieve, it’s time to lock them in and write them down. The process of writing down goals and dreams has proven to be very effective. A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, showed that “you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams, simply by writing them down on a regular basis.” But don’t write them down, put them away and never read it again. This process will work only if you refer to what you wrote regularly too.

Build Your Action Plan

Having clear goals sets the stage for you to build an action plan that you can use to accomplish anything. Remember that goal-setting is completely different from achieving the goal, but to take decisive, successful actions, you need a map. For long-term goals, you can create five-year plan increments to make your progress more planned and predictable.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it,” as Abraham Lincoln once said. Your action plan is your success roadmap and the best tool you can use to hit your targets.

Always be Accountable for Your Actions

You’ve written it down but no progress or change will ever take place without action. The most grueling part of any achievement is taking action. This is where reality hits you in the face with all the obstacles, setbacks, and excuses you can find. But you won’t get anywhere if you do not hold yourself accountable enough.

To set yourself accountable for your goals, share them with somebody. Some people choose to be quiet about their goals. You are more likely to follow through with them if you share them with someone though. If sharing with someone you know is inconvenient for you, getting a personal coach or online coach could help. It might sound silly, but the action of telling someone else what your goals are make you more likely to accomplish them. When you do so, make sure you are open to seeking positive support and help. You don’t have to do it alone, and finding someone to help you be accountable helps you do that.

Do Not Give Up Easily

Success is a long, winding road filled with unpredictable turns, unforeseen setbacks, and unanticipated challenges. You need to be persistent! Sometimes we get lucky enough to get it right the first time around, but that’s not always the case for every type of goal we have. The wise thing to do is to manage your expectations, and when you hit a bump, not to give up. Persist through the odds, stay the course, and keep going.

If you’re sure about your goal, do not give up at all. Be patient and give yourself the opportunity to learn and grow from any failures. In any pursuit, commit yourself to these things and you’ll be crushing your goals in no time. There is a price for everything and in order to achieve great things, you need to commit to paying the price that goes with it. Finally, always be positive. It works wonders!
